One other thing that bugs me about trad publishing is how they want you to be active, or even better, popular, on all social media platforms. As if, the built in prospect of readers from these social media followers is what they care about more than the writing. It's sad

They are of course looking for books that will be successful anyway, without them doing anything to earn their hefty fees. All they actually do is edit to make any book they take on exactly the same as all the other books they take on. If readers want something genuinely different from what is churned out by the sausage machine, then indie publishing is definitely the place to look, and once people get used to finding these books by themselves, you have to wonder if there will be any point to the old system of publishing? It is certainly likely to change, but what that change will look like is difficult to imagine because the whole picture is changing unpredictably.
